1974 Topps #614 Adrian Devine

About Adrian Devine
Devine's Braves debut came on June 27, 1973, at age 21, a start against the San Francisco Giants in which he gave up five earned runs in five innings of a 6-5 loss. He then worked mostly in relief, going 2-3 with a 6.40 ERA and four saves in 24 games. Topps #614 is his rookie card, issued in January 1974 with the Atlanta Braves.
Adrian Devine was a right-handed reliever from Galveston, Texas, who pitched for the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers across 1973 and 1975 to 1980. The Braves drafted him in the second round in 1970. An arm injury cost him most of 1974, and doctors advised him to retire and go back to school; he chose surgery instead and worked his way back through Triple-A Richmond, where he went 10-6 with a 2.98 ERA in 1975. He finished his major league career 26-22 with a 4.21 ERA and 31 saves in 217 games, 12 of them starts. His last game came on July 3, 1980, and he pitched briefly for Wichita the next year before the Rangers released him. Devine died on June 27, 2020, at 68, after repeated bouts with cancer.
