1974 Topps #164 Tom House

About Tom House
House made the 1973 Braves out of spring training after nine strikeouts in nine exhibition innings, helped by being left-handed and out of options. He worked 52 games that year, going 4-2 with a 4.68 ERA. On April 18, 1973, his 11th-inning bunt popped up to catcher Dave Rader, who turned the first unassisted double play by a catcher at second base. His 1974 Topps card, #164, pictures him with Atlanta.
Thomas Ross House, a left-handed pitcher out of the University of Southern California, was Atlanta's third-round pick in the 1967 draft's secondary phase. He debuted for the Braves on June 23, 1971, and spent eight big-league seasons mostly as a reliever, moving to the Boston Red Sox in a December 1975 trade for Roger Moret and finishing with the expansion Seattle Mariners in 1977-78. His best year came in 1974, when he posted a 1.93 ERA over 102 2/3 relief innings for Atlanta. On April 8, 1974, he caught Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run in the Braves bullpen and ran the ball back to Aaron at home plate. After retiring with a 29-23 career record, House earned a Ph.D. in sports psychology and became a pitching coach, working with Nolan Ryan in Texas and later training NFL quarterbacks.
