1974 Topps #519 Bill Sharp

About Bill Sharp
Card #519 shows Sharp as a White Sox outfielder and is his rookie card. His 1974 season began with a demotion to Iowa after spring training, and he did not return to Chicago until June 4, when he took over right field from Pat Kelly. On August 7 his two-out single in the ninth brought home the winning run against Nolan Ryan, who had carried a bid for a third career no-hitter into the inning. He finished at .253 in 100 games.
Bill Sharp was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played parts of four seasons, 1973 to 1976, for the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers. A three-sport star at Lima Senior High School in Ohio, he took a football scholarship to Ohio State, where a separated shoulder ended that path and pushed him toward baseball. The White Sox made him the first pick of the second round of the 1971 draft, 25th overall, ahead of George Brett and Mike Schmidt. He debuted on May 26, 1973, in a game that ran 17 innings before it was suspended, and he was known for his glove: in August 1973 he leaped to catch a drive at the right-center wall and started a game-ending double play. Chicago traded him to Milwaukee for Bob Coluccio on May 8, 1975. Over 398 games he hit .255 with 9 home runs and 95 RBI. Knee trouble, traced to a ruptured patellar tendon in high school, ended his career in the minors in 1977. He later worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and managed the independent Dakota Rattlers in 1995 and 1996.
