1974 Topps #582 Bucky Dent

About Bucky Dent
Dent's first full season brought 154 games at shortstop for an 80-80 White Sox club. He batted .274 with 136 hits and 45 RBI, and he finished second to Mike Hargrove of Texas in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. He had hit .295 in 95 games for Iowa in 1973 before Chicago called him up. Topps gave him his rookie card, #582, with the Chicago White Sox.
Bucky Dent was a shortstop who played 12 American League seasons for the White Sox, Yankees, Rangers and Royals between 1973 and 1984, hitting .247 with 40 home runs. The White Sox took him sixth overall in the 1970 draft. In 1975 he led American League shortstops with a .981 fielding percentage and made the first of three All-Star teams, adding selections in 1980 and 1981. Chicago traded him to the Yankees on April 5, 1977 for Oscar Gamble, LaMarr Hoyt, minor-league pitcher Bob Polinsky and $250,000, and he started at short for New York's 1977 and 1978 champions. On October 2, 1978, batting ninth in the one-game AL East tie-breaker at Fenway Park, he hit a seventh-inning three-run home run off Mike Torrez with a bat borrowed from Mickey Rivers, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead. New York won 5-4. He went to Texas in August 1982 in a trade for Lee Mazzilli and finished with Kansas City. Dent later managed the Yankees for part of 1989 and 1990, going 18-22 and then 18-31, and coached for the Cardinals, Rangers and Reds. His grandmother gave him the name Bucky.
