1974 Topps #457 Chuck Goggin

About Chuck Goggin
Goggin opened 1973 with Pittsburgh, which sold him to Atlanta on May 24, and he appeared in 65 games over the season. He batted .297 across the two clubs, with 27 hits in 91 at-bats. He played 19 games at second base and six in the outfield. His rookie card, 1974 Topps #457, is printed with the Braves.
Chuck Goggin was a switch-hitting utility man who hit .293 in 72 major-league games for the Pirates (1972-73), Braves (1973) and Red Sox (1974). A Marine, he served a 13-month tour in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967, stepped on a landmine and took shrapnel wounds in his legs and back, and was back for 1968 spring training. He received the Bronze Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Purple Heart, and is the most decorated Vietnam War veteran to play in the majors. Signed by the Dodgers in 1964, he took up switch-hitting under Tommy Lasorda in the Arizona Instructional League and joined the Pirates organization in the August 1969 trade that sent Jim Bunning to Los Angeles. At Double-A Waterbury in 1971 he became an everyday catcher after asking the Pirates to buy him two catcher's mitts, and in 1972 he finished second to Dwight Evans in International League MVP voting at Charleston. Called up in September 1972, he debuted by drawing a walk as a pinch-hitter in Montreal, then started at second base and led off in a game Roberto Clemente entered with 2,999 hits, collecting two hits off Jon Matlack. He later managed the Nashville Sounds in 1978 and served as U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Tennessee.
