About this card

Cards #589-599 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #590, #593, #597 and #598 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Randolph was a Pirates infielder with 30 games and a .164 average behind him when Topps printed him on its four-man Rookie Prospects card #592, alongside Dave McKay of the Twins, Jerry Royster of the Braves and Roy Staiger of the Mets. All four have rookie cards here, and Randolph's is one of the key rookie cards of the 1976 set. The Pirates traded him to the Yankees in December 1975 in the Doc Medich deal, so the Pirates listing on #592 was already out of date. Second baseman for the New York Yankees from 1976 to 1988, a six-time All-Star and 1980 Silver Slugger who won two World Series, later a Yankees coach and manager of the Mets from 2005 to 2008.

The #592 Rookie Prospects card was issued after McKay's 33 games with Minnesota in 1975, when he hit .256 with two home runs. He shares it with Willie Randolph (Pirates), Jerry Royster (Braves, though he had played the 1975 season with the Dodgers) and Roy Staiger (Mets). Each of the four is on his rookie card, and Randolph's is one of the set's key rookies. McKay spent most of 1976 in the minors and played 45 games for Minnesota, hitting .203 with eight RBI. Dave McKay, a Vancouver-born infielder, played for Minnesota, Toronto and Oakland from 1975 to 1982. He then coached in the majors from 1984, long alongside Tony La Russa.

Royster shares Rookie Prospects card #592 with Willie Randolph of the Pirates, Dave McKay of the Twins and Roy Staiger of the Mets, and it is the rookie card for all four. The card shows him with the Braves, after a 1975 in which he played 13 games for the Dodgers and hit .250. In 1976 he played 149 games, 148 of them at third base, and stole 24 bases. Jerry Royster played 16 seasons as an infielder and outfielder, mainly with the Atlanta Braves, and retired in 1988 with 1,049 hits and 189 stolen bases. He later managed the Milwaukee Brewers and the KBO's Lotte Giants.

Staiger shared the 1976 rookie-prospects card #592 with Willie Randolph (Pirates), Dave McKay (Twins) and Jerry Royster (Braves), with Staiger as the Mets representative. All four men are on their rookie cards. He opened the year platooning with Wayne Garrett. When Garrett was traded to Montreal with Del Unser at midseason, manager Joe Frazier, who had managed Staiger at Tidewater, made him the everyday third baseman. He hit his first home run off Woodie Fryman on August 2 and finished with 95 games and a .220 average. Tulsa-born third baseman who played for the New York Mets from 1975 to 1977, then four games for the Yankees in 1979. He hit .228 with four home runs in 152 games and was part of the first two-team Mets-Yankees player trade.
