About this card

Cards #589-599 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #590, #593, #597 and #598 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

On September 28, 1975, Anderson held Detroit to five hits in Milwaukee's 7-0 win. His 1976 Topps rookie card, #593, listed him with the Brewers alongside Ken Crosby of the Cubs, Mark Littell of the Royals and Butch Metzger of the Padres. It was also a rookie card for Crosby and Metzger. Larry Anderson, a right-handed pitcher out of Pico Rivera, California, was a second-round pick of the Brewers in 1971. He appeared in 16 games for Milwaukee and Chicago from 1974 to 1977, going 2-3 with a 5.66 ERA.

Crosby pitched in seven games for the 1976 Cubs, working 12 innings with a 12.00 ERA, and made his last appearance on May 8. On April 25 at Dodger Stadium he was on the mound when Rick Monday took the flag from two men trying to burn it, then gave up a home run to Henry Cruz in the same inning. His Rookie Prospects card, #593, is shared with Larry Anderson (Brewers), Mark Littell (Royals) and Butch Metzger (Padres). Ken Crosby was a British Columbia-born right-handed reliever who pitched 16 games for the Chicago Cubs in 1975 and 1976, going 1-0 with an 8.41 ERA. He started for BYU in the 1968 College World Series.

Littell shares Rookie Prospects card #593 with Larry Anderson of the Brewers, Ken Crosby of the Cubs and Butch Metzger of the Padres. The season behind the printing was 1975, when he made seven appearances for Kansas City and struck out 19 in 24 1/3 innings. In 1976, the year the card circulated, he went 8-4 with a 2.08 ERA and 16 saves. Right-handed reliever for the Royals and Cardinals, Mark Littell closed for Kansas City's 1976 division winner with 16 saves and a 2.08 ERA, then pitched for St. Louis until elbow bone spurs ended his career in 1982.

Metzger's #593 card sits in the Rookie Prospects run beside Larry Anderson (Brewers), Ken Crosby (Cubs) and Mark Littell (Royals); it is a rookie card for Metzger, Anderson and Crosby. In 1975 he made four September relief appearances for San Diego after a season at Triple-A Hawaii, and earned his second major league win against the Dodgers, escaping an 11th-inning, one-out, bases-loaded jam. Butch Metzger, a right-handed reliever, shared the 1976 National League Rookie of the Year Award with Pat Zachry after going 11-4 with 16 saves in 77 games for San Diego. He pitched for four clubs in five seasons, 1974 to 1978.
