About this card

Cards #589-599 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #590, #593, #597 and #598 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Merchant spent most of 1976 at Triple-A, hitting .296 in 68 games for Pawtucket, which played that year as the Rhode Island Red Sox, and went up to Boston whenever a catcher was hurt. His card is #594, one of the 1976 Topps four-player Rookie Prospects cards, and it is the rookie card of all four men. He is printed with the Red Sox, alongside Ed Ott of the Pirates, Royle Stillman of the Orioles and Jerry White of the Expos. Catcher Andy Merchant of Mobile, Alabama, played three games for the Red Sox in 1975 and 1976, going 2 for 6, with a two-single debut the day after Boston clinched the 1975 AL East title.

Ott spent 1976 as Pittsburgh's third-string catcher behind Manny Sanguillen and Duffy Dyer, hitting .308 in 27 games. He broke his right hand warming up Bob Moose in the bullpen. His first start behind the plate came September 23 at Wrigley Field, where he had two hits, including a double that drove in the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning. Card #594 is the four-man Rookie Prospects card with Andy Merchant of the Red Sox, Royle Stillman of the Orioles and Jerry White of the Expos, and it is Ott's rookie card. Ed Ott played for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1974 to 1980, converting from the outfield to catcher, platooned on the 1979 World Series champions, and finished with the 1981 Angels. He later coached the Astros and Tigers.

Stillman's 1975 call-up with Baltimore produced six hits and a .429 average. He opened 1976 on the Orioles roster, mostly as a pinch hitter, and collected two hits in 22 at-bats over 20 games before returning to Rochester. His #594 card is a four-player Rookie Prospects issue shared with Andy Merchant of the Red Sox, Ed Ott of the Pirates and Jerry White of the Expos, and it is the rookie card for all four. Left-handed outfielder for the Orioles (1975-76) and White Sox (1977), acquired from the Dodgers in the December 1971 trade that sent Frank Robinson to Los Angeles.

White's 1975 season ran 39 games for the Expos, 30 of them in the outfield, and produced a .299 average. His first major league home run came on September 8 at Jarry Park, against the Mets. Card #594, a four-player Rookie Prospects card, is the rookie card for every man on it: White with the Expos, Andy Merchant with the Red Sox, Ed Ott with the Pirates and Royle Stillman with the Orioles. Switch-hitting outfielder who played most of his career with the Montreal Expos, homered in the 1981 NLCS, spent two seasons in Japan and was the Minnesota Twins' first base coach until October 2012.
