About Kurt Bevacqua

Topps printed Bevacqua twice in 1976, both times with the Milwaukee Brewers: #427 is his regular card and #564 is his Bubble Gum Blowing Champ card. On the field he played 12 games with 7 at-bats, mostly as a late-inning pinch-runner for Hank Aaron. On May 30 he pinch-ran for George Scott, scored the winning run, and was sent down to Triple-A Spokane after the game.

Kurt Bevacqua was a right-handed utility infielder and pinch hitter who played 15 seasons, 1971 to 1985, for Cleveland, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Texas and San Diego. Signed by Cincinnati in 1967, he reached the majors with Cleveland on June 22, 1971, and played every infield position and the outfield. He picked up the nickname Dirty Kurt in the Reds' spring training of 1970, when Pete Rose, looking at his filthy uniform after a day of B games and infield drills, called him that. In 1975 he won the Joe Garagiola Bazooka bubble gum blowing championship over Johnny Oates. In the 1984 World Series he served as the Padres' designated hitter and went 7-for-17 with two home runs, including a three-run homer in Game 2, the only World Series win in San Diego's history. He finished with a .236 average, 27 home runs and 275 RBI, and spent most of his later career with the Padres.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1976 Topps #564 card?

It is card #564 of the 660-card 1976 Topps Baseball set, picturing Kurt Bevacqua of the Milwaukee Brewers.

What is the Bubble Gum Blowing Champ card?

#564 is a novelty card, not Kurt Bevacqua's regular card (that is #427). The front names him the 1975 Joe Garagiola/Bazooka Bubble Gum Blowing Champ, and the back prints the bracket of the 1975 championships, where he beat Johnny Oates in the final.

How many cards are in the 1976 Topps Baseball set?

660 cards, numbered 1 through 660 with none skipped and printed in equal quantities as a single series. No card carries a catalogued print variation, so the base set and the master set are the same 660 cards.
