About Dave Lopes

Lopes appears on three 1976 cards. #4 belongs to the Record Breakers subset, #197 is the National League stolen-base League Leaders card pairing him with Joe Morgan of the Reds and Lou Brock of the Cardinals, and #660 is his own Dodgers card. His 1975 streak of consecutive steals ran from June 10 through August 24 and ended when Gary Carter of the Expos caught him stealing in the 12th inning, after a successful steal in the seventh. He scored 108 runs that year.

Davey Lopes was a right-handed second baseman and leadoff man, the second-base piece of the Dodgers infield of Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey, which stayed together from 1973 through 1981 and won the 1981 World Series. Tommy Lasorda converted him from outfielder to second base in the minors, and he debuted at 27 on September 22, 1972. He led the National League in steals with 77 in 1975 and 63 in 1976, and that first year he stole 38 consecutive bases without being caught to pass Max Carey's record. He retired with 557 steals, 418 of them for Los Angeles. He was an All-Star from 1978 to 1981 and won the 1978 Gold Glove. Oakland, the Cubs and the Astros followed from 1982 to 1987. He later coached first base for several clubs, including the 1998 Padres and the 2008 Phillies, and managed Milwaukee from 2000 until he was fired 15 games into 2002, finishing 144-195. He died on April 8, 2026.
