1976 Topps #406 Ed Herrmann

About Ed Herrmann
A contract dispute with the White Sox preceded Herrmann's trade to the Yankees on April 1, 1975. He appeared in 80 games for New York that season, 24 of them behind the plate. He hit .255 with 6 home runs and 30 RBI. His 1976 Topps card, #406, pictured him with New York.
Ed Herrmann was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent eleven major league seasons, seven of them with the Chicago White Sox before finishing his career with the Yankees, Angels, Astros and Expos. Signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and drafted by the White Sox that same year, he broke in with Chicago in 1967. His best offensive season came in 1970, when he hit .283 with 19 home runs. Herrmann built a reputation as one of the American League's premier knuckleball catchers, working behind Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood and Eddie Fisher, and he caught Wood through four consecutive 20-win seasons. He made the American League All-Star team in 1974. After his playing days ended in 1978, Herrmann scouted for the Kansas City Royals and coached youth teams in Southern California. He died in 2013 at age 67.
