About George Stone

George Stone made 13 appearances for the 1975 Mets, 11 of them starts. He went 3-3 with a 5.05 ERA in 57 innings. A torn rotator cuff followed, and after the season New York traded him to Texas for Bill Hands. Both pitchers retired instead of reporting. His 1976 Topps card, #567, still shows him with the Mets.

George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. In 1969 he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. His success stemmed from two different change-ups and a slider taught to him by Braves general manager Paul Richards. Joining the Mets in 1973, he had his finest year, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, his final season. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts.
