1976 Topps #471 Jim Burton

About Jim Burton
Burton's 1976 Topps card, #471, is his rookie card and pictures him with the Red Sox. It follows a 1975 in which he threw 53 innings with 39 strikeouts, won a game in relief on July 11 and was voted a full World Series share by his teammates.
Jim Burton was a left-handed reliever for the Boston Red Sox in 1975 and 1977. A Michigan native, he struck out 288 batters in 228 innings at the University of Michigan, threw a no-hitter against Wisconsin in 1971 and was named to The Sporting News All-American team. Boston took him fifth overall in the 1971 secondary draft. After four years in the minors he no-hit Tidewater for Pawtucket on June 8, 1975, was called up the next day, and went 1-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 29 games for the pennant winners. In Game 7 of the 1975 World Series against Cincinnati he walked Ken Griffey and Pete Rose in the ninth, then gave up a two-out hit to Joe Morgan that put the Reds ahead for good. He made one more appearance, in 1977. Burton died in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2013.
