1976 Topps #434 Morris Nettles

About Morris Nettles
The Angels traded Nettles and Jim Spencer to the White Sox on December 11, 1975, for Bill Melton and Steve Dunning, so his #434 card still carries California from his last big-league season. In White Sox camp he was one of many young outfielders chasing the center field job, which went to Chet Lemon.
Morris Nettles was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Venice, California, known for his speed. The Angels took him in the second round of the 1970 draft out of Venice High School, though he had never played varsity baseball there. He led the Pioneer League with a .369 average in his first pro summer, then hit .338 at Shreveport in 1971 and led the Texas League at .332 in 1972. He reached California in 1974, was sent back to Salt Lake City after 32 days, and returned in late August when Mickey Rivers was hurt. He hit .274 over 56 games that year and drove in the first run and two more in Nolan Ryan's third no-hitter. In 1975 he opened as the center fielder, stole 22 bases and scored 50 runs, but lost the job to Rivers. He played 168 major league games with 42 stolen bases and finished in the minors in 1976 with Toledo and Iowa. He played in Mexico into 1982 and died in 2017.
