About Dave Concepcion

In 1977 Dave Concepcion played 156 games, every one at shortstop, and hit .271 with 8 home runs. His 29 stolen bases were part of six straight seasons with 20 or more, a run that began in 1973. He was again named to the National League All-Star team. His 1977 Topps card, #560, shows him with the Cincinnati Reds.

Dave Concepcion was the Cincinnati Reds' shortstop through the Big Red Machine years and played all 19 of his seasons, 1970 to 1988, in a Reds uniform. Born in Ocumare de la Costa, Venezuela, he worked as a bank teller before scout Wilfredo Calvino signed him in 1967, and he reached Cincinnati in April 1970 at 21, listed at 6 feet 2 and 155 pounds. He became the regular shortstop in 1973 and was named to nine National League All-Star teams between 1973 and 1982. He won five Gold Gloves, four in a row from 1974 to 1977 and a fifth in 1979, and two Silver Sluggers. He paired with Joe Morgan up the middle on the Reds teams that won the 1975 and 1976 World Series. At Riverfront Stadium he perfected a one-bounce throw to first off the artificial turf. In the 1982 All-Star Game in Montreal he homered off Dennis Eckersley and was named the game's MVP. He finished with 2,326 hits, 101 home runs and 321 stolen bases, moving to second and first base late in his career as Barry Larkin took over at short. Cincinnati inducted him into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2000 and retired his number 13 on August 25, 2007. He is a member of the Caribbean Series Hall of Fame.
