1977 Topps #469 Pat Kelly

About Pat Kelly
Kelly spent 1976 mostly as the White Sox' designated hitter, batting .254 with 15 stolen bases in 107 games. Baltimore acquired him from Chicago for Dave Duncan on November 18, 1976, and #469 in the 1977 Topps set shows him with the Orioles. He opened 1977 with a 1-for-18 start, then hit safely in 19 straight games from May 1 through 23.
Pat Kelly was a left-handed outfielder who played 15 major league seasons with the Twins, Royals, White Sox, Orioles and Indians. He finished with 1,147 hits, a .264 average and 250 stolen bases. His older brother Leroy became a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back for the Cleveland Browns. At Philadelphia's Simon Gratz High School, Pat played baseball and football and won the 1962 Cliveden Award as the city's outstanding prep athlete. Minnesota signed him that September. In Orlando the following year, he and his Black teammates had to lodge separately from their white teammates. Kelly became an All-Star with Chicago in 1973 and played in Baltimore's 1979 World Series. After becoming a born-again Christian in 1975, he became an ordained minister and served ministries in Baltimore and Cleveland.
