About Tommy Smith

1976 gave Smith his first real stretch of big-league playing time: 55 games for Cleveland, a .256 average and eight stolen bases. Seattle took him with the 58th pick of the 1976 expansion draft. In 1977 he played 21 games for the Mariners and went 7-for-27. Card #14 is printed with the Seattle Mariners.

Tommy Smith was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who appeared in 121 major league games across five seasons, four with the Cleveland Indians and the last with the Seattle Mariners. A native of Albemarle, North Carolina, he pitched at North Carolina State, where he started a 1968 College World Series game and took the loss against USC. In 1969 he played for the Bourne Canalmen in the Cape Cod Baseball League and was named a league all-star. Cleveland selected him in the third round of the 1970 draft, and he spent several seasons in its farm system, getting only brief stints with the major league club from 1973 through 1975. He finished with a .232 average, four home runs and nine stolen bases. After his playing career he opened a youth baseball training facility and also worked as a salesman. He died on November 1, 2024.
