About Bill Stein

Stein re-signed with Seattle before 1978 on a deal running through 1980 and hit .261 in 114 games. On August 25 he broke up Dennis Martinez's no-hit bid in the seventh inning against Baltimore, and on August 28 he had a four-hit game against Boston. His 24 errors at third base were second most in the American League. His Topps #476 shows him with the Mariners.

Bill Stein was a right-handed infielder who played 14 major league seasons, 1972 to 1985, for the Cardinals, White Sox, Mariners and Rangers. He batted .396 and made the American Baseball Coaches Association All-American team at Southern Illinois, then hit his first big-league home run in his debut on September 6, 1972. Stein moved around the diamond, with time at third, second, first and the outfield, and he was also a pinch hitter. In May 1981 he set an American League record with seven consecutive pinch hits, and he finished that year at .330. He hit .310 for Texas in 1983. His career line was .267 with 44 home runs and 311 RBIs in 959 games. After playing he managed in the Mets system, at Little Falls and Columbia, and in independent ball.
