1978 Topps #440 Dave Lopes

About Dave Lopes
Lopes made his first All-Star team in 1978 as Joe Morgan's backup and singled in a run off Goose Gossage in his only at-bat. He hit 17 home runs with 58 RBI and stole 45 bases in 49 tries, and he outpolled Morgan, the winner of the previous five Gold Gloves, for the award. He batted .389 in the NLCS and .308 with three home runs in the World Series. His 1978 Topps card, #440, shows him with the Dodgers.
Davey Lopes was a right-handed second baseman and leadoff man, the second-base piece of the Dodgers infield of Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey, which stayed together from 1973 through 1981 and won the 1981 World Series. Tommy Lasorda converted him from outfielder to second base in the minors, and he debuted at 27 on September 22, 1972. He led the National League in steals with 77 in 1975 and 63 in 1976, and that first year he stole 38 consecutive bases without being caught to pass Max Carey's record. He retired with 557 steals, 418 of them for Los Angeles. He was an All-Star from 1978 to 1981 and won the 1978 Gold Glove. Oakland, the Cubs and the Astros followed from 1982 to 1987. He later coached first base for several clubs, including the 1998 Padres and the 2008 Phillies, and managed Milwaukee from 2000 until he was fired 15 games into 2002, finishing 144-195. He died on April 8, 2026.
