1978 Topps #651 Doug Rader

About Doug Rader
Doug Rader opened 1977 with San Diego, hitting .271 with five home runs in 52 games, before Toronto purchased his contract on June 8. He finished with 18 home runs and 67 RBI over 148 games, splitting time between third base and designated hitter with the Blue Jays. The 1978 Topps #651 shows him in Toronto colors. On March 18, 1978, midway through spring training, the Blue Jays released him at his own request and he retired.
Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays, he hit 155 home runs and drove in 722 runs. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
