1978 Topps #677 Ed Herrmann

About Ed Herrmann
Ed Herrmann backed up Joe Ferguson behind the plate for Houston in 1977 and hit .291 in 56 games with 17 RBI. Montreal purchased him in 1978 to sit behind Gary Carter, and he retired after that season, his final game coming on September 15. His 1978 Topps card, #677, shows him with the Astros.
Ed Herrmann was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent eleven major league seasons, seven of them with the Chicago White Sox before finishing his career with the Yankees, Angels, Astros and Expos. Signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and drafted by the White Sox that same year, he broke in with Chicago in 1967. His best offensive season came in 1970, when he hit .283 with 19 home runs. Herrmann built a reputation as one of the American League's premier knuckleball catchers, working behind Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood and Eddie Fisher, and he caught Wood through four consecutive 20-win seasons. He made the American League All-Star team in 1974. After his playing days ended in 1978, Herrmann scouted for the Kansas City Royals and coached youth teams in Southern California. He died in 2013 at age 67.
