1978 Topps #464 Jerry Grote

About Jerry Grote
The Mets traded Grote to Los Angeles in August 1977 for two players to be named later. Backing up Steve Yeager, he finished the year batting .268 in 60 games between the clubs. Shortly after the trade he faced former batterymate Tom Seaver for the only time in his career and struck out. His Dodgers card is #464.
Jerry Grote learned to catch under former Tigers manager Del Baker while attending Trinity University in San Antonio. He signed with Houston in 1962 and built a batting cage from chicken wire and carpeting at his parents' farm, practicing against a pitching machine he and a friend assembled. His major league career covered 16 seasons with the Colt .45s, Mets, Dodgers and Royals. He caught every inning of New York's 1969 postseason and collected two hits that helped decide World Series games: a ninth-inning single in Game 2 and a leadoff double in the tenth inning of Game 4. Grote finished with 1,092 hits and a .252 average. After playing, he managed in the minors and later broadcast Round Rock Express games. The Mets inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1992.
