About Paul Dade

Dade opened 1978 with a solo home run on Opening Day in an 8-5 win over the Royals, starting a 10-game hitting streak, and hit his only major league grand slam in Toronto off Jerry Garvin. Manager Jeff Torborg called him the club's best leadoff man. A knee injury in May and a .161 mark over his last 56 at-bats made for a seesaw season. He finished at .254 with 12 steals in 93 games. His rookie card, #662 in the 1978 Topps set, is an Indians issue.

Paul Dade was a Seattle-born outfielder and third baseman who played six major league seasons for the Angels, Indians and Padres between 1975 and 1980. California took him with the 10th pick of the 1970 draft out of Nathan Hale High School, and his teammates at El Paso called him The Executioner for his fierce play. After the Angels sent him back to Triple-A in 1976, he won the Pacific Coast League batting title at .363, then signed with Cleveland as a free agent and wore double-zero on his back, explaining that nothing for nothing equals two zeros. His 1977 season with the Indians produced career highs of 134 games, 134 hits and 45 RBI. He finished with a .270 average and 57 stolen bases in 439 games, spent 1981 with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan, and died in Seattle in 2016.
