1978 Topps #482 Rick Miller

About Rick Miller
On #482 Miller still wears Boston colors after a 1977 in which he hit .254 in 86 games. A pitch from Seattle's John Montague broke his left thumb and put him on the disabled list from May 3 to May 30. He played without a contract to reach free agency, then signed with the Angels, the first player to leave the Red Sox that way.
Rick Miller was a left-handed-hitting center fielder who played 15 seasons in the majors, 12 of them with the Boston Red Sox and three with the California Angels (1978-80). A Michigan State product, he won the Big Ten batting title at .429 in 1969 and was Boston's second pick in that year's draft. He made his debut on September 4, 1971, and became known for defense in Fenway Park's center field, winning a Gold Glove with the Angels in 1978. The Red Sox reacquired him with Carney Lansford and Mark Clear for Rick Burleson and Butch Hobson on December 10, 1980. He hit .269 with 1,046 hits and 28 home runs in 1,482 games. In 1983 he went 17-for-36 as a pinch-hitter. He is Carlton Fisk's brother-in-law, and later managed the Nashua Pride and the New Bedford Bay Sox.
