1978 Topps #504 Roger Freed

About Roger Freed
Card #504 followed Freed's 1977, when he hit .398 with 5 home runs and 21 RBI in 49 games for St. Louis after the Cardinals took him in the Rule 5 draft. On August 22 he pinch-hit for Al Hrabosky and hit a three-run homer off the Dodgers' Charlie Hough in a seven-run ninth that erased a 6-1 deficit. On the last day he was at .402 when he pinch-hit and grounded into a force play against the Mets, ending the game and his bid for .400.
Roger Freed was an outfielder and first baseman who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1970 to 1979, with Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Montreal and St. Louis. He won The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award twice, the only man to do so, the second time at Denver in 1976 with 42 home runs. In between he played the 1975 season for Monterrey in the Mexican League. He found his role as a Cardinals pinch hitter and was released in spring training of 1980. He finished with 22 home runs and a .245 average, and died in Chino, California, in January 1996 at age 49.
