1978 Topps #444 Roy Hartsfield

About this card
This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.
About Roy Hartsfield
In May 1978 Hartsfield left the Blue Jays for a time to care for his wife, Alice, who recuperated in Toronto after an operation. The club ended the season 59-102. Rico Carty hit .284 with 20 home runs in 104 games, and Jim Clancy led the staff with 10 wins. Topps gave the manager a card of his own, #444.
Roy Hartsfield was a second baseman for the Boston Braves from 1950 to 1952 who later became the first manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. He was the 1949 American Association MVP at Milwaukee. As a 1950 rookie he hit .277 and made The Sporting News rookie all-star squad, although his 26 errors at second base led the majors. He played most of that season with a broken finger and said nothing about it. His last game was a pinch-running appearance on June 14, 1952, and the Braves sent him to Brooklyn in January 1953 for Andy Pafko. He then spent 19 years in the Dodgers organization as a minor league player, manager and, from 1969 to 1972, major league coach under Walter Alston. His 1967 Spokane club won the Pacific Coast League flag in a one-game playoff, and his Hawaii teams won the league title in 1975 and 1976. Toronto named him manager in September 1976. The Blue Jays went 166-318 in his three seasons and finished last in the American League East each time, and Bobby Mattick replaced him after 1979. Hartsfield died in Ball Ground, Georgia, in 2011 at age 85.
