About Bob Horner

Horner followed his debut season by batting .314 with 33 home runs and 98 RBI for Atlanta in 1979. His rookie card, Topps #586, featured the Braves infielder as he began splitting time between the infield corners. He appeared in 82 games at third base and 45 at first base that season.

Bob Horner was a right-handed power hitter who played third base and first base for the Braves and Cardinals. Atlanta selected him first overall in the 1978 draft out of Arizona State, where he won the inaugural Golden Spikes Award. He had been the Most Outstanding Player of the 1977 College World Series and hit .412 with 25 home runs and 100 RBI in his final college season. Horner moved directly to the majors and homered off Pittsburgh's Bert Blyleven in his debut. The National League named him Rookie of the Year. He hit a career-high 35 home runs in 1980, then made the 1982 All-Star team during a season of 32 homers and 97 RBI. Wrist fractures interrupted his 1983 and 1984 seasons. On July 6, 1986, he hit 4 home runs against Montreal in a game Atlanta lost. He spent 1987 with Japan's Yakult Swallows, hitting 31 homers before returning to the majors with the Cardinals. A shoulder injury shortened that final season. Horner finished with a .277 average, 218 home runs and 685 RBI in 1,020 major league games.
