About Bob Randall

Randall's playing time shrank to 80 games in 1979, 71 of them at second base and seven at third. He hit .246 with 14 runs batted in over 199 at-bats. His 1979 Topps card is #58, printed with the Twins.

Bob Randall was a right-handed second baseman who played all five of his major league seasons, 1976 to 1980, for the Minnesota Twins. The Dodgers drafted him in 1966, 1968 and finally in the second round in 1969, when he signed. He spent five and a half years in their farm system, playing 744 games and hitting over .300 four times without a promotion. On December 23, 1975, Los Angeles traded him to Minnesota for reserve outfielder Danny Walton. Manager Gene Mauch then moved Rod Carew to first base, and Randall beat out Jerry Terrell for the second base job in spring training. He hit .267 in 153 games in 1976 and finished fourth in the American League in sacrifice hits. His only major league home run came June 23, 1976, off Chris Knapp of the White Sox at Metropolitan Stadium. Rob Wilfong took over the position by 1979. Randall finished with 341 hits, a .257 average and 91 runs batted in. He later coached college baseball, leading Iowa State from 1985 to 1995 and Kansas from 1996 to 2002.
