Mike Cubbage was a left-handed-hitting third baseman who played eight major league seasons, 1974 to 1981, for the Rangers, Twins and Mets, and later coached and managed. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia, he played baseball and football at the University of Virginia and was drafted by the Washington Senators in 1971. He debuted with Texas on April 7, 1974, against Oakland. Traded to Minnesota in 1976, he became the Twins' regular third baseman and hit for the cycle against Toronto on July 27, 1978. He moved to first base in 1980 and signed with the Mets as a free agent for 1981. He finished with a .258 average, 34 home runs and 251 RBIs in 703 games. Cubbage then managed in the Mets' farm system from 1983 to 1989, including Tidewater, coached third base for New York, and was interim Mets manager in September 1991, going 3-4. He was interim Red Sox manager in 2002 spring training after Joe Kerrigan was fired. He died in 2024.
