1979 Topps #387 Gary Thomasson

About Gary Thomasson
Eight months after joining the Yankees, Thomasson was dealt to the Dodgers on February 15, 1979 for catcher Brad Gulden. He hit .248 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs that year. Card #387 shows him with the Yankees, with whom he had gone 1-for-4 in the 1978 World Series against Los Angeles.
Gary Thomasson was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman who played nine major league seasons, six of them with the San Francisco Giants. The Giants drafted him in the seventh round in 1969 out of Oceanside High School in California, and he debuted on September 5, 1972, pinch-hitting for Frank Reberger in a 4-3 win over the Padres. Between 1978 and 1979 he changed teams three times, moving from the Giants to the Oakland Athletics, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he was on the Yankees' 1978 World Series winner. He finished with 900 games, 61 home runs and a .249 average. The Yomiuri Giants bought his contract after 1980 and he played two seasons in Japan on the biggest contract the league had given a player; he came close to the league strikeout record before a knee injury ended his career.
