About George Medich
His Topps card, #657, shows Medich with the Rangers. In 1979, his second season in Texas, he moved between rotation and bullpen, going 10-7 with a 4.17 ERA and 19 starts. He added four complete games and a shutout in 149 innings. He followed with 14 wins in 1980 and won 50 games in five seasons in Texas.
Doc Medich was a 6-foot-5 right-handed starter who pitched eleven big-league seasons, 1972 through 1982, for the Yankees, Pirates, Athletics, Mariners, Mets, Rangers and Brewers, finishing 124-105 with a 3.77 ERA and 16 shutouts. He was also a physician: an Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native who played tight end at the University of Pittsburgh, he entered its medical school in 1970 and earned his MD in 1977, working out an arrangement with the Yankees that let him pitch while he studied. The Doc nickname followed him from his first Yankees camp. He was the last Yankee winning pitcher at the original Yankee Stadium, a shutout of Detroit on September 29, 1973. His one postseason appearance came for Milwaukee, two innings in Game 6 of the 1982 World Series. His 1981 season in Texas, 10-6 with a 3.08 ERA, tied for the American League lead in shutouts.
