1979 Topps #504 Larry McWilliams

About Larry McWilliams
McWilliams reached Atlanta in July 1978 and went 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 15 starts, including the August 1 win that ended Pete Rose's 44-game hitting streak. His Braves card #504 is his rookie card. In 1979 he made 13 starts and went 3-2 with a 5.56 ERA.
Larry McWilliams was a 6-foot-5 left-handed starter who pitched 13 seasons in the majors, from 1978 to 1990, for the Braves, Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies and Royals. Atlanta took him sixth overall in the January phase of the 1974 draft out of Paris Junior College in Texas. In 1983 with Pittsburgh he went 15-8 with a 3.25 ERA and 199 strikeouts, and The Sporting News named him its National League left-handed pitcher on its All-Star team. A year later he went 12-11 with a 2.93 ERA over 227 1/3 innings. After a 3-11 season in 1986 he returned to Atlanta, then pitched for St. Louis in 1988 and split 1989 between the Phillies and the Royals, who acquired him on September 2 for catcher Jeff Hulse. Kansas City released him in May 1990. He finished 78-90 with a 3.99 ERA and 940 strikeouts. Pirates catcher Tony Pena nicknamed him Spaghetti because of his thin legs.
