1979 Topps #644 Manny Mota

About Manny Mota
Mota went 10-for-33 for Los Angeles in 1978. His 1979 Topps Dodgers card was #644. In October 1979 he visited President Jimmy Carter at the White House, presented him with a Dodgers jacket and asked the United States to buy more Dominican sugar.
Manny Mota signed with the New York Giants in 1957 for a $400 bonus. His minor league path took him from Michigan City to Tacoma before his major league debut with San Francisco in 1962. He played twenty major league seasons and batted .304, becoming a pinch-hitting specialist with the Dodgers. He established the major league career pinch-hit record in 1979; Lenny Harris broke it in 2001. Mota coached Los Angeles from 1980 through 2013 and also worked on its Spanish-language broadcasts. His father, Andres, gave him the nickname El Chory, roughly meaning Shorty. Two sons, Andy and Jose, also reached the majors.
