About Mark Wagner
Alan Trammell had won the Tigers' shortstop job over Wagner in the spring of 1978, and Wagner played 39 games that year. In 1979 he appeared in 75 games and hit .274 with a .341 on-base percentage. He played 41 games at shortstop and 29 at second base. He also hit a home run and drove in 13. Topps printed #598 with the Detroit Tigers.
Mark Wagner was a shortstop who played nine major league seasons with the Detroit Tigers (1976-80), Texas Rangers (1981-83) and Oakland Athletics (1984). The Tigers drafted him in 1972 out of Harbor High School in Ashtabula, Ohio, and he won MVP honors at Clinton in 1973. Called up in August 1976 when Tom Veryzer hurt his ankle, he had hits in his first two at-bats and a game-winning RBI off Goose Gossage in his first week. Detroit traded him to Texas in December 1980 for relief pitcher Kevin Saucier. He beat out Mario Mendoza to open 1982 as the Rangers' starting shortstop. On May 17, a baseball thrown by the White Sox' Jerry Koosman hit him on the back of the head as he stretched before a game, and dizzy spells and other injuries followed. On August 20, 1984, he pitched the last 1 2/3 innings of a 14-1 loss to the Tigers for Oakland, allowing two hits and no runs. He finished with a .243 average, 3 home runs and 71 RBI in 415 games.
