About Pat Zachry

Zachry beat the Reds on April 30, 1978, to finish the month 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA, then reached 7-1 in June. He became the Mets' lone All-Star that summer. On July 24 he was pulled four batters after Pete Rose's seventh-inning single extended his hitting streak, and in frustration he went to kick a batting helmet on the dugout steps, missed, and hurt his left foot. He left on crutches and was lost for the season. His 1979 Topps card is #621, printed with the Mets.

Pat Zachry was a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher who worked for the Reds, Mets, Dodgers and Phillies from 1976 to 1985. Born in Richmond, Texas, and raised in Waco, he was a 19th-round pick of Cincinnati in 1970. In 1976 he shared the National League Rookie of the Year award with San Diego reliever Butch Metzger, the first time the award had been shared, and pitched for the Reds team that won the World Series. He pitched for New York through 1982. His 3.01 ERA in 1980 was the best among Mets starters, yet it came with a 6-10 record, and his 14 losses in 1981 tied for the most in the National League. In his first start of 1982 he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Cubs. With the Dodgers in 1983 and 1984 he worked only in relief, apart from one emergency start, and the Phillies released him in June 1985 after 10 appearances. He later coached in the Dodgers system and played in the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989. He finished 69-67 with a 3.52 ERA in 293 games and died on April 4, 2024.
