About Pat Mullin

Patrick Joseph Mullin (1917-1999), a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Trotter, Pennsylvania, was signed by the Detroit Tigers before the 1937 season as a 19-year-old amateur free agent and reached the majors for a brief look in 1940. He made a striking impression in 1941, batting .345 in 54 games, before World War II Army service cost him four full seasons at the peak of his career (1942-1945). Mullin returned in 1946 and enjoyed his best years soon after, earning American League All-Star selections in both 1947 and 1948; in that 1948 campaign he hit .288 with 23 home runs and 80 RBI, posting an .889 OPS that ranked seventh in the AL behind stars like Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio. On June 26, 1949, he belted three home runs in a single game. He spent his entire 10-season playing career with Detroit (1940-41, 1946-53), finishing as a valued left-handed pinch hitter with a .271 average, 676 hits, 87 home runs, and 385 RBI. After retiring in 1953, Mullin remained in the game for decades as a scout, minor-league manager, and major-league coach for the Tigers, Indians, and Expos. This card sits in the fifth series of the landmark 1952 Topps set, just below the famously scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the iconic Mickey Mantle #311.
