1954 Topps #239 Bill Skowron
Bill Skowron's rookie card - 'Moose' of the Yankees dynasty.

About Bill Skowron
A powerfully built right-handed first baseman, Bill "Moose" Skowron attended Purdue on a football scholarship but hit .500 as a sophomore in 1950—a Big Ten record that stood a decade—before the New York Yankees signed him as an amateur free agent that September. Debuting in 1954 (the year of this rookie card), he anchored first base through 1962 before finishing his 14-season career with the Dodgers, Senators, White Sox, and Angels (1954–1967). An eight-time All-Star, Skowron batted .282 with 211 home runs and 888 RBI over 1,478 games. He won five World Series titles—1956, 1958, 1961, and 1962 with the Yankees, plus 1963 with the Dodgers—and shone in October, driving in the winning run in Game 6 and belting a three-run homer in Game 7 of the 1958 Series (.293, 8 HR across eight Fall Classics). His nickname "Moose" came from a boyhood haircut his grandfather said resembled Mussolini's, shortened by his family. This card's back misprints his birthdate; he was born December 18, 1930 (d. 2012).
