About Al Aber

Albert Julius Aber, a 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher born July 31, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, was signed by his hometown Cleveland Indians in 1946 out of West Technical High School at age 19. He debuted on September 15, 1950, with a complete-game victory, then missed the 1951 and 1952 seasons on military service during the Korean War. After six appearances for Cleveland in 1953, he was dealt to the Detroit Tigers on June 15, 1953, in the large trade that also sent Steve Gromek, Ray Boone, and Dick Weik to Detroit for Art Houtteman and others. Aber pitched for the Tigers (1953-1957) and finished with the Kansas City Athletics in 1957. Over six major-league seasons he went 24-25 with a 4.18 ERA and 169 strikeouts in 168 games. His best year came in 1955, when he appeared in 39 games and went 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA; catcher Frank House said Aber threw a "heavy" ball that was tough to handle. This 1954 Topps card (#238, Series 3) captures him early in his Detroit tenure. Aber later worked as a sales representative and died May 20, 1993.
