About Bob Miller

Robert Gerald Miller, born July 15, 1935, in Berwyn, Illinois, was a left-handed pitcher whose 1954 Topps card (#241) captures him as one of the Detroit Tigers' celebrated "bonus babies." After going 33-6 with three no-hitters in high school, the 6'1" Miller signed with Detroit on June 20, 1953, for a reported $60,000 bonus — the Tigers outbidding the Phillies and White Sox — on the very same day the club inked a young Al Kaline. Under the era's bonus rules he had to stay on the big-league roster, and he made his MLB debut just five days later on June 25, 1953, at age 17. He pitched for the Tigers from 1953 to 1956, posting a sharp 2.45 ERA in 1954, and after military service and time in the minors resurfaced in 1962 with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. Over 86 major-league games (8 starts) he went 6-8 with a 4.72 ERA and 75 strikeouts. Not to be confused with the older Phillies "Whiz Kid" Bob Miller (born 1926), this Miller died on May 24, 2022, at age 86.
