1954 Topps #232 Lou Limmer

About Lou Limmer
Lou Limmer was a left-handed first baseman born March 10, 1925, in the Bronx, New York, and signed by the Philadelphia Athletics in 1946 after scout George Halpin discovered him. A prolific minor-league slugger, he won the 1949 Western League home run crown (29 HR) and was named 1950 American Association Rookie of the Year with the St. Paul Saints. His major-league career was brief and split across just two seasons, 1951 and 1954, both with the A's; he batted .202 with 19 home runs and 62 RBIs over 209 games. Limmer earned a lasting footnote in history: on September 25, 1954, he hit the last home run in Philadelphia Athletics history—a shot off Johnny Sain—before the franchise moved to Kansas City. He was also part of what is often cited as baseball's only all-Jewish confrontation, pinch-hitting on May 2, 1951, against Detroit's Jewish battery of pitcher Saul Rogovin and catcher Joe Ginsberg. One of the game's notable Jewish players, Limmer later became president of a Bronx synagogue. This 1954 Topps #232 is his rookie card and captures him in his final big-league season.
