1954 Topps #233 Augie Galan

About Augie Galan
Card #233 pictures Augie Galan in his role as a coach for the Philadelphia Athletics, the club's final season in Philadelphia, serving under player-manager Eddie Joost. A Berkeley, California native who signed with the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals in 1931, Galan had earlier broken his right elbow falling from a tree as a boy; it healed improperly and pushed him to learn to hit left-handed, making him a switch-hitter. The Cubs bought his contract in 1934, and the versatile outfielder went on to play 16 major-league seasons (1934-1949) for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, New York Giants, and Athletics, hitting .287 with 1,706 hits, 100 home runs, 830 RBI, and 123 stolen bases. A three-time All-Star (1936, 1943, 1944) who homered in the 1936 game, he led the NL in stolen bases and runs (133) in 1935 while becoming the first player to go an entire season without grounding into a double play, and on June 25, 1937 he was the first NL player to homer from both sides of the plate in one game. Teammates called him "Goo Goo" for his big round eyes. He appeared in three World Series (1935, 1938, 1941) but never won a title.
