About Norm Zauchin

A power-hitting first baseman, Norm Zauchin began his pro career in 1950 with the Double-A Birmingham Barons, where he set a Rickwood Field record with 35 home runs before reaching the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1951. He played parts of six big-league seasons for the Red Sox (1951, 1955-57) and Washington Senators (1958-59). His breakout came in 1955, when he hit .239 with 27 homers in 130 games, led AL first basemen in fielding percentage (.995), and finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Herb Score and Billy Klaus. Zauchin is best remembered for May 27, 1955, when he drove in 10 runs on three home runs and a double in the first five innings of a 16-0 rout of Washington. Before the 1958 season he was traded with Albie Pearson to the Senators for future batting champ Pete Runnels. He retired a .233 career hitter with 50 home runs and 159 RBI over 346 games (born 1929, Royal Oak, MI; died 1999). This high-number series-2 card is Zauchin's Topps rookie card.

Variations & how to tell them apart

High Number (#161-210)

Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
