About Danny O'Connell
Daniel Francis O'Connell (1929-1969) was a Paterson, New Jersey-born infielder who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946, was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1949, and reached the majors with Pittsburgh in 1950, finishing third in that year's National League Rookie of the Year voting. After two years of U.S. Army service during the Korean War (1951-52), he returned in 1953 and hit .294 with a 26-game hitting streak that remained a Pirates record. Pittsburgh dealt him to Milwaukee for six players and $100,000 before the 1954 season, and the Braves installed him at second base, where he was a regular for three-plus seasons. On June 15, 1957, Milwaukee traded O'Connell, Bobby Thomson, and Ray Crone to the New York Giants for veteran second baseman Red Schoendienst, whose arrival helped the Braves win the 1957 World Series. O'Connell also played for the San Francisco Giants and Washington Senators, finishing a 10-season career with a .260 average, 1,049 hits, 39 home runs, and 320 RBIs before dying in a 1969 car accident at age 40. This is a fourth-series high-number card from the 1956 Topps set.
