About Don Newcombe

Don "Newk" Newcombe began his professional career at 17 in the Negro National League with the Newark Eagles before signing with Brooklyn, reaching the majors in 1949. The hard-throwing right-hander made an immediate impact, going 17-8 and capturing 1949 National League Rookie of the Year honors. Across ten big-league seasons with the Dodgers (1949-1958), Reds and Indians, he went 149-90 with a 3.56 ERA, 1,129 strikeouts and 24 shutouts, earning four All-Star selections and a 1955 World Series ring. His masterpiece came in 1956, when a 27-7 record with a 3.06 ERA made him the first pitcher to win both the NL MVP and the inaugural Cy Young Award in the same year. An unusually gifted hitter for a pitcher, he batted .271 with 15 career home runs. Newcombe remains the only player to win Rookie of the Year, MVP and the Cy Young over a career. This #235 card falls in Series 3, printed on white back stock.
