1957 Topps #386 Lyle Luttrell

About Lyle Luttrell
Lyle Kenneth Luttrell (1930-1984) was a shortstop who signed with the Washington Senators organization in February 1951, after attending the Jack Rossiter Baseball School in Cocoa, Florida. His career was interrupted by U.S. Navy service during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Luttrell reached the majors after his finest minor-league year, batting .324 with 149 hits for the 1956 Chattanooga Lookouts, and appeared in 57 games for Washington across the 1956 and 1957 seasons, collecting 32 hits, nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 14 RBIs before returning to the minors. He is best remembered off the field: after Nashville catcher Earl Averill broke his jaw in an August 1955 on-field fight, Luttrell sued and was awarded compensatory damages, becoming widely cited as the first player to win a lawsuit over injuries from an on-field altercation, though the verdict was later overturned on appeal. He died of a heart attack in 1984. This 1957 Topps card is his rookie card.
