Jack Sanford - 1957 Topps #387
1957 Topps #387 Jack Sanford
Uncorrected error: Says 4-hitter against Cubs was only outing of '56, pitched in 3 games. It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Jack Sanford
John Stanley Sanford was a right-handed pitcher from Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. Signed by Phillies scout Joe LaBate in 1947 after Red Sox scouts dismissed him as too small, he ground through roughly nine minor-league seasons (interrupted by an Army stint) before debuting for Philadelphia on September 16, 1956, against the Cubs. His breakout came in 1957, when he went 19-8 with a 3.08 ERA and a major-league-best 188 strikeouts, earning National League Rookie of the Year honors and an All-Star selection. Traded to the Giants, he peaked in 1962, reeling off 16 straight wins on the way to a 24-7 season and a pennant, then blanking the Yankees on three hits in a 2-0 World Series Game 2 shutout; he finished runner-up for the Cy Young Award. Sanford also pitched for the Angels and Athletics, retiring with a 137-101 record, 3.69 ERA, and 1,182 strikeouts over 12 seasons. This is his Topps rookie card.
