1957 Topps #388 Pete Daley

About Pete Daley
Peter Harvey Daley, born January 14, 1930, in the gold-mining town of Grass Valley, California, was a right-handed catcher signed by Red Sox scout Charlie Wallgren in June 1948. After climbing through the minors at Roanoke, Scranton, and Louisville—with an Army stint in 1951-52 that took him to Japan—he reached the majors with Boston in 1955. Over five seasons in Boston he backed up Sammy White, batting .245 with a sterling .996 fielding mark. His finest year was 1956 (.267, 5 HR, 29 RBI), highlighted by his only career grand slam on May 20 at Comiskey Park. Oddly, both of his four-hit games fell on June 14—4-for-5 in 1956 and a perfect 4-for-4 in 1959. Traded to Kansas City for Tom Sturdivant before 1960, then taken by the expansion Washington Senators, he finished a seven-year career (.239, 18 HR, 120 RBI, 391 games) in 1961. This 1957 Topps card captures him as Boston's reserve backstop.
