About Dave Jolly
Dave Jolly (1924-1963) was a right-handed relief pitcher from Stony Point, North Carolina. Signed by the St. Louis Browns organization in early 1946, he spent seven seasons in the minors before debuting with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953, the year the franchise moved to Milwaukee. Over five seasons there (1953-1957) he worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen. A soft-tosser who relied on a slider, fastball, and a knuckleball he added in 1954, he finished second on the Braves staff to Ernie Johnson with 158 relief appearances over that span. His best year was 1954, when he went 11-6 with 10 saves and a 2.43 ERA in 47 games, ranking among the National League leaders in several relief categories. That June he hit his only big-league home run, off Philadelphia's Curt Simmons. Johnson dubbed him 'Gabby' as a joke on his quiet, reserved nature. Jolly was on the 1957 World Series champion Braves but did not pitch in the Series, and his career ended that year. He died in 1963, a year after brain-tumor surgery.
