About Reno Bertoia
Reno Peter Bertoia, born Pierino in San Vito al Tagliamento, Italy, on January 8, 1935, grew up in Windsor, Ontario, and became one of baseball's original bonus babies when the Detroit Tigers signed him in 1953. In his big-league debut on September 22, 1953, the 18-year-old faced 47-year-old Satchel Paige and struck out on three pitches. An infielder who played mostly third base, Bertoia spent parts of ten major-league seasons (1953-1962) with the Tigers, Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins, and Kansas City Athletics, appearing in 612 games with 425 hits, 27 home runs, 171 RBIs, and a .244 average; his best year came in 1960 with Washington. He roomed for years with fellow bonus baby Al Kaline and, of the seven Italian-born major leaguers, had the longest career. Never a Cooperstown honoree, he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 and later taught school in Windsor for three decades. This 1957 Topps card is a sheet-verified Series 5 short print, making it scarcer than most in the set.
