About Ralph Terry

Ralph Willard Terry (1936-2022) was a right-handed pitcher from Big Cabin, Oklahoma, signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in November 1953 after Branch Rickey famously auditioned him by placing a $100 bill on the mound. He debuted in 1956 and pitched twelve big-league seasons through 1967 for the Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians, and New York Mets. A staple of five straight Yankees pennant winners (1960-1964), Terry is remembered for two contrasting World Series moments: he surrendered Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home run that ended the 1960 Series for Pittsburgh, then earned redemption as 1962 World Series MVP, throwing a complete-game 1-0 shutout in Game 7 against San Francisco. That season he made his only All-Star team and led the American League with 23 wins. He finished 107-99 with a 3.62 ERA and 1,000 strikeouts, later becoming a professional golfer. This is his Topps rookie card, a sheet-verified Series 5 short print.
